Sandhill Crane

I know you've heard of the Sandhill Crane
large and good looking, far from plain
gray with white cheeks, four feet tall
a red crown on his head and a very loud call
it nests in the wetlands on the ground
tends to the hatchlings of soft muted brown
together for life, the parents share
the feeding and preening of their pair
who is not touched when they see
a strolling Sandhill family
