Winter-Ready

already bundled in heavy furs
the squirrels are winter-ready
they scurry along their tree roads
stuffing acorns in their cheeks
I watch them among the crisp brown leaves
amused at their reaction to the weakening sun,
the shorter days, and the chilly nights
I watch them as I scurry around
unpacking blankets and quilts
preparing to get winter-ready too
