June 11th - The Presentation on Stuart's Chief of Police, O. B. Padgett (1924 - 1926) at the Stuart City Hall on June 10th was a wonderful success. The highlight of the evening came after Alice had completed her talk and called for any questions from the audience. One of those who raised his hand was none other than the only son of O. B. Padgett -- Jim Padgett, who drove down from his home near Perry, FL especially to attend the presentation and to surprise Alice. They had been communicating about the book and material on O. B. Padgett for nearly 3 years but had never met. Jim was called up to the stand and also spoke to the audience and took questions. Those in attendance were thrilled with the opportunity to meet Jim, along with local resident, Billy Chase - son of Chief Padgett's officer, Newt Chase, who was also present.
The title: "I had the Legal Right to Kill, But I Never Had to Kill A Man..." is from the May 2008 issue of FLORIDA MONTHLY MAGAZINE, pages 8- 10.
The article was written by Stuart resident, Alice L. Luckhardt.
She has been published in HISTORY, ANCESTRY, FAMILY CHRONICLE, JUPITER, SOUTH FLORIDA HISTORY, INTERNET GENEALOGY, DISCOVERING FAMILY HISTORY, ZOO & AQUARIUM VISITORS, GENEALOGICAL HELPER and FLORIDA MONTHLY MAGAZINE over the last several years.
In this newest article, she writes about Stuart's former Chief of Police, O. B. Padgett from the 1920s. This was a time of Prohibition, outlaws, bootleggers, and where lawmen were many times like lawmen of the 'Old West'.
Presentation on the colorful life and times of O. B. Padgett at the June meeting of the Stuart Heritage at City Hall on Tuesday, June 10th at 7 p.m. had about 50 people in attendance.
Her newest book, "O. B. Padgett ~ A Florida Son" was available at the June 10th presentation.
