Port Salerno Pre-K Gets Books and Volunteer Reader
Contributed by: sheila leach on 10/7/2007

Contemporary Women, a subgroup of the Stuart Branch of the American Association of University Women, found a novel way to adopt a classroom. They applied for and received a grant from the Florida AAUW. Members of Contemporary Women purchased books, book bags and additional teaching materials for Mrs. Fuentes Pre-K Title I classroom at Port Salerno Elementary. Members of the group have volunteered to handle the distribution and collection of books each week throughout the school year. The project called Early Literacy is an effort to get books into the hands of very young children and begin to imprint in them a love of reading and books. Mary Brower, a member of Stuart AAUW and Contemporary Women got the group involved after sharing her experience reading to the Pre-K children at a Dr. Seuss Day event.
