What do YOU know about the Gettysburg Address?
The members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Halpatiokee Chapter, are sponsoring again this year an American History Essay Contest to promote an interest in and love of the history of our nation and to encourage patriotism.
Because 2009 is the 200 th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, the essay topic is not
American Revolution centered. The topic this year is:
"What message did the Gettysburg Address communicate to our war-torn nation in 1863? How are the ideals articulated in the speech still relevant for our country today?" The title is: "The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address."
The contest is for Martin County students, in school or homeschooled, in grades five (5) through eight (8) with one final winner to be chosen from each grade. The winning essay from each grade will be sent to the Florida State DAR for the state contest.
Information on the contest is available at any branch of the Martin County Library System and at county public schools and private schools. For questions or information you may also contact NinaTaylor at
