Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services want to stem the growing tide of kids facing hearing loss. Some estimates indicate that over the last 10 years, the percentage of second graders with hearing loss has increased almost three fold. Eighth grade hearing loss is up almost four fold. The primary culprit seems to be the popular MP-3 player.
Thanks to the generosity of the following community members, DHHS is able to bring the Dangerous Decibels Program to all the fourth graders in Martin and Indian River Counties starting this school year. This curriculum -- designed by the Oregon Museum of Science and History and the Oregon Hearing Research Center, teaches children the harmful effects of loud noise.
We at DHHS wish to thank the following people and organizations for their generosity. In Martin County - Dr. Daniel Sharkey of Treasure Coast ENT, Mrs. Laurie Gaylord, Mr. John Levinson, Mrs. Margaret Cassidy, Ms. Claudia Anderson, and the Rotary of Stuart (2). In Indian River County - Ms. Marilyn C. Link, Ms. Elsebeth Stryker (2), Ms. Barbara Gault (2), Mrs. Pam King, Mrs. Jean McHugh, Ms. Eleanor G. Sexton, and Mrs. Jayne Hustead. One more sponsorship opportunity is available in Martin County and 3 more are available in Indian River. If you are interested in being a sponsor, contact Rick Kottler at 335-5546.
