Fifth Grade students and teachers at J.D. Parker School of Math, Science, & and Tech. were awarded a day filled with hands-on science explorations thanks to the Target Field Trip Grant awarded to myself on behalf of the entire 5th grade team.
Thanks to Target all 82 fifth grade students eager to be challenged loaded up on buses Thursday, April 16, 2009 and headed an hour south to W.P.B. to the South Florida Science Museum. Students were overjoyed and grateful to experience all exhibits including: The Max Planck Society Science Tunnel, an interactive cutting-edge technology journey, the Grossology exhibit where students had fun exploring a giant-sized Operations game and pumping bodies until they exploded with loud burps, then using their senses to smell all too familiar smells such as foot odor, and another enticing station had the students playing a guitar to reinforce science concepts such as: wave lengths, pitches, and frequencies. Students, teachers, and chaperones also experienced upclose sights of fresh and salt water fish from around the world at The McGinty Aquarium exhibit! We especially enjoyed seeing and reading about the genetically engineered fish that helps detect pollution! How COOL! We even saw for ourselves actual Egyptian artifacts and mummys at the Egypt Exhibit! To conclude our day of science challenges we stopped to ponder a dozen or so brainbending puzzles and ended up with a few dozen good laughs.
We all had such a great time but most of all it was a pure delight to see all 82 curious 5th grade students engaged and have such an amazing opportunity!
On behalf of the fifth grade teachers and students at J.D. Parker School of Math, Science, & Technology, I would like to say thank you to Target for sponsoring such a wonderful opportunity for our teachers and students. What a treat!
Thank you for making a difference in education.
Sincerely,
Melissa DuBois
