Two prestigious awards were given out Tuesday, August 18, when the Fort Pierce regional campus of the Florida State University College of Medicine gathered its faculty members for a night of appreciation and academic updates.

The evening event took place at the Kight Center on the campus of Indian River State College in Fort Pierce. The keynote speaker was John P. Fogarty, M.D., dean of the FSU College of Medicine, presenting his State of the College address.

The regional campus faculty is composed of 212 active Treasure Coast physicians who take turns teaching 30 third- and fourth-year medical students. The students work one-on-one with the physicians and gain clinical experience through seeing patients in the local hospitals, surgery centers, physicians' offices and ambulatory care facilities.

Two faculty members received awards from Randall Bertolette, M.D., dean of the Fort Pierce campus. One, titled Guardian of the Mission, is for a physician whose activities have furthered the college's mission: to "educate and develop exemplary physicians who practice patient-centered health care, discover and advance knowledge and are responsive to community needs, especially through service to elder, rural, minority and underserved populations." This award was presented to Genon Wicina, M.D., a pediatrician at Martin Memorial Pediatrics in Stuart. Dr. Wicina initiated an alliance between the mental health and primary care communities in pediatrics. Her collaborative has involved the placement of therapists in various primary care offices to facilitate the referral process and enhance the level of care in those offices. She has spearheaded the development of pediatric hospice on the Treasure Coast and she is in the process of organizing and developing a comprehensive hospice program for children.

The other award, Outstanding Clinical Faculty Educator, is for exemplary achievement in meeting student educational needs, working collaboratively, dedication to the curriculum principles and enthusiasm for teaching. This award went to Daniel Edelman, D.O., an internal medicine physician and hospitalist at Martin Memorial in Stuart. Dr. William Hood, the internal medicine clerkship director who nominated Dr. Edelman said, "He's a valued and trusted resource not only for the students, but for me. He's always there for the students if I need him." One student commented, "He is very knowledgeable and enjoys teaching students. He spent a considerable amount of time teaching different medicine concepts, which was very helpful." Another FSU medical student said, "Dr. Edelman is very eager and willing to teach and listen. He is always excited about teaching, is a good role model physician, and I learned something new every day."
