Volunteers pitch in as Stuart takes part in the
National River Cleanup
On Saturday, June 6th the City of Stuart once again sponsored the Annual National River Cleanup.
National River Cleanup, sponsored by American Rivers, is a series of community-based cleanups happening nationwide. This popular annual event raises public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulating in our nation's waterways. Twenty-four volunteers participated along with tens of thousands of volunteers taking part in hundreds of cleanups across the country to remove trash from local rivers and streams.
Our volunteers who gathered bright and early set out in boats and on foot to tackle litter in Krueger Creek, Poppleton Creek, Frazier Creek, and along the banks of the St. Lucie River.
The three hour event in Stuart was a success resulting in the removal of over 1,000 lbs. of trash from local waterways! Volunteers pulled together collecting typical items such as bottles, cans, plastic bags, etc. but also collected many unique items such as a computer monitor, a sealed needle kit, a baby floaty, large pieces of Styrofoam, chairs, tires, planting pots, wood, a fishing net and a plastic storage container.
This event proves that a small group of people can make a big difference!
