A Celebration of Mary Magdalene was held Saturday, July 26 at the Morgade Library in Stuart. Nearly thirty women and men participated in a worship service planned by the Celebrations Group, a group of Treasure Coast women who celebrate the feminine aspects of God. In the service they referred to God in such terms as "Loving God" and "Holy Mystery" and also as "Our Mother and Father" and "She Who Is."
Prior to worship, Sr. Roberta Popara spoke on Mary Magdalene. She highlighted Mary Magdalene's role as first witness to Christ's resurrection, "Apostle to the Apostles," early church leader and model for the faith community. She noted that there is no Biblical foundation for Mary as a reformed prostitute.
After the service many participants took postcards to send to the Secretary General of the International Synod of Catholic Bishops which will be held in October. The postcards urge him to invite women Biblical experts to the Synod and devote more pastoral attention to Jesus and St. Paul's inclusion of women leaders. They also ask him to expand opportunities for women to preach and in the lectionary, give equal prominence to Biblical passages that cite the experience of women and men leaders.

I believe Jesus taught us to pray with the following: "Our FATHER, who art in Heaven, HALLOWED BY THY NAME."
