How many times have you heard that quote? It is true, I suppose, to some extent. There are amazing pictures, that could never be truly captured with mere words. They express depth and emotion. However, for most of us, the pictures we have and the photos we take are the everyday variety - cute, wonderful, memorable, silly and precious. To us they are small snippets of our lives, our family and friends. They are remind us of the past, help us cherish the present and look forward to the future.
I am an avid scrapbooker. I love pictures and making memory albums. I am a traditionalist for the most part, but I really love the creative side as well. Although I will never give up my love of photos, recently I have found myself being drawn to stories. I have found myself saying things like "Do you remember when...?" or "I remember the time that...". I have enjoyed telling stories of my childhood to my kids and retelling stories about funny times in our family. It isn't that we have never told stories before, but somehow they are more significant right now to me.
I think that our stories are a way to connect us to the past and the people that have impacted our lives. They are a way to communicate just a small part of what made us who we are today. They revive affection for loved ones and good times. They warm our hearts to remembering love and compassion. They bring to the forefront of our minds all that is good in our lives. Stories, expecially if written, share with others a part of ourselves. There is identity for us and our families in them. There is history and connection.
Not all memories are cherished stories, though. Some things we would be very happy to forget. But some of them, though they may hit a tender spot in our hearts, may be salvagable and can be seen in a new light now. Maybe they taught us something , that now we could pass on to another. Maybe they spur us on to cherish our loved ones with renewed enthusiam. Maybe they inspire us to tell more stories and cherish the good in our lives.
Whether you are a writer or not, you have a story. Write it down and share it. Put it with pictures or a la carte and cherish it. If we don't, we just might forget some wonderful memories. I look forward to sharing some stories myself.

Great thoughts Alana. I was posting an article today, came across your article, and was very touched by your thoughts. Remembering does add value to the "Days of our lives" and pictures and words are a great way of remembering. Thanks for sharing. Mike Green
