The Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) Program is a partnership with the University of Florida and many other environmentally connected organizations to address the serious problems of pollution in stormwater runoff, water shortages and disappearing habitats by enlisting Floridians in the battle to save our natural resources. Today, more than ever, we are challenged to preserve our planet.
To this goal, Pat Bonis, Program Assistant of the FYN Program under Multi-County Agent, Fred Burkey, held a meeting of 18 Martin County Master Gardeners to create teams to go out into Martin County providing educational materials and guidance to homeowners to be recogonized as meeting Florida Friendly standards set by the University of Florida.
There is a process whereby a homeowner contacts the Martin County Extension Office (772-288-5654) and demonstrates a desire to make his/her yard the best it can be. A survey is then provided and the homeowner personally checks each item to see if his/her yard meets these qualifications. Armed with this information, the homeowner is able to correct any bad practices that may have occured and to remove any invasive plants in their yards, so they can comply
with good management practices, including the right plant in the right place.
When the homowner feels he/she has done all they can on their own, they return the survey and request that a team of Yard Advisors visit their home. This team then goes over the check list, item by item, complementing good practices or answering questions about what to do to correct a problem area. In this manner the homeowners are taught the nine FYN Principles to enhance their environment by improving home and landscape management.
