Use the Power of Your Mind to Think Yourself Thin!
Contributed by: Susan Jakers on 8/14/2008

The weight loss industry concentrates on helping people lose weight but, unfortunately, they do not address the most important issue. When people have trouble losing weight or who have lost weight and regained it the reason is very simple. They did not change their thoughts, habits and mental attitude.

Do you realize that unless you change your thoughts you will not succeed? Your thoughts control everything you do and don't do; everything you accomplish and don't accomplish. The challenge occurs when your conscious mind decides on a goal that does not coincide with your subconscious.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz considered by many the father of self-improvement wrote Psycho Cybernetics in 1960. In his book Dr. Maltz describes how some of his patients continued to have feelings of unworthiness and unhappiness even after their surgery. He found that unless their self-image was altered no amount of exterior surgery would change how they felt.

In the 1970's the Soviets and East Germans used structural mental rehearsal for their athletes and dominated some of the olympic sports. Whether you call it mental rehearsal, mental pictures or mental imagery it all means the same. There are numerous studies proving that we can change our thoughts, self-image and habits by using our subconscious mind to change erroneous beliefs.

Losing weight is a multifaceted process. The process includes changing you're eating habits or as some people say dieting, exercising and most important how you think and feel about yourself, your self-image.

The decision to lose weight is usually not as difficult as the implementation. The challenge arises when your thoughts and feelings don't coincide with your goal. You may have consciously decided to lose weight but when your subconscious mind recalls all of your previously unsuccessful attempts it now sabotages your new effort.

Your subconscious stores everything you have ever done in vivid detail with all of your thoughts and emotions. Your subconscious is like a warehouse of old movies that can never be destroyed. When previous attempts have ended in failure your mind can only replay the negative pictures.

The only answer is to create new positive pictures. I don't know if you realize it but your mind cannot tell the difference between an actual event and one that is vividly imagined. By creating new positive pictures of success you will be on the road to accomplishing anything you desire including permanent weight loss.

I know from personal experience that this works because after years and years of trying to lose weight permanently I found the answer. When I created my new positive pictures, so that all of my thoughts and feelings worked together, I was able to lose weight permanently.

I changed my eating habits, started exercising and lost weight. I had a weight problem since I was 8 years old and have now been able to keep my weight off for over 20 years. If I can do it I know that you can too.

When I started the process I had to decide why I wanted to lose weight and what I was going to accomplish once I lost the weight. Here are some of the questions that I asked myself which helped me on my road to success. I know that they will help you as well.

Think about the questions and write down the answers in as much vivid detail as possible.

Why do I want to lose weight?
What would I like to accomplish when I have lost the weight?
How will I feel about myself and my accomplishment?
What happened each time I previously went on a weight loss program?
Which of my thoughts and old pictures that keep coming to mind have to be changed? Why?

I hope that this process will give you a better understanding of yourself and your thoughts. I know it did for me. Change your negative images to positive and successful images of yourself. Remember, perception is reality.
