Neurogenix, a new company in Stuart offering neurofeedback, will be featured every Thursday from 5:30-6:00 p.m. on radio station WSTU (1450 AM).
"Mind Matters," a live call-in show, is designed to discuss topical issues having to do with the brain and behavior. It is co-hosted by James D. Brown and Gwen Carden, founders of Neurogenix.
"Neurofeedback is biofeedback for the brain and has more than 40 years of research showing remarkable effectiveness in treating a number of conditions that normally require medication," said Brown. "Those conditions include attention deficit disorder, depression, anxiety, sleep problems and seizures."
Using a high speed computer and sophisticated computer games, clients play video games using only the electrical activity generated from their brains. The game progresses when the "player" adjusts his brain waves to a desirable operating range, and stops or slows when the client's brain goes outside of the optimal training range. Over time, new neural pathways grow, and the client sees symptoms that formerly were troublesome diminish or disappear.
"Equally encouraging," added Carden,"is the fact that once a person's symptoms diminish and once the client has had adequate practice, the symptoms usually do not come back.. This is usually not the case with medication, which often works while being taken but does not result in a permanent improvement."
