Representative Paige Kreegel, (R-72)briefed the major features of the recently enactedFlorida property tax reform measureat the June meeting of the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).He candidly stated that themodest scope of relief was all that was realistically achievable during the limited time of the special session. Kreegel also cautioned members to carefully analyze the long term impacts of forfeiting current benefits enjoyed under the Homestead Exemption. The super exemption of up to $195,000under the new plan would be deducted from a home's market value which in some caseswill significantlyreduce the home's assessed taxable value and annual property tax bill. Rapidly escalating real estate market conditions could wipe that out over the long term, and the homeowner would no longer enjoy the current protection of the 3 percent cap.Kreegelalso emphasized that claims of cuts to education and public safety were without merit citing the disproportionate increasesof local budgets in many Florida localities that have not added one teacher, police officer or fire fighter. The measure muststill clearthe finalsignificant hurdle of receiving a60 percent majority in next January's statewide referendum which will be held concurrent with thePresidential primary.Rep. Kreegel also reviewed issues associated with this year's insurance reform legislation and reviewedaccomplishments of the regular session.
