Guitar Impresario Leads Danny Pearl Tribute
Contributed by: John Avitabile on 10/13/2009

One of the earliest and most tragic victims of post 9/11 terrorism was Danny Pearl, a young, respected Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and beheaded by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002.

Few people know that Danny also was an accomplished musician, expertly playing the electric violin, fiddle and mandolin. He loved music as much as he loved reporting the news. He understood that both can bridge the differences among people.

During the month of October, the Daniel Pearl Foundation celebrates Daniel Pearly World Music Days, which has grown to include more than 3,100 performers in 85 countries, among them Elton John, Yo Yo Ma, Herbie Hancock and Ravi Shanka.

Locally, this event will be conducted by Larry Allen Brown, a nationally renowned acoustic guitarist, composer and teacher. Brown, who recently moved to the Treasure Coast from Alabama, will present "Harmony for Humanity" on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Stuart. He will combine stirring music and recitation in a moving tribute to Danny Pearl and a plea for world peace in a program he has created specifically for this event.

Brown's two albums -"Cobb Lane" and "Music for the High Country"-combine the beauty, mystery and magic of Celtic, Appalachian and American folk music. A native of Chicago, Brown has taught acoustic and classical guitar to students throughout the United States.

He is a graduate of the respected Berklee College of Music in Boston (also the alma mater of Quincy Jones, Melissa Etheridge and Branford Marsalis) and has appeared in performances with Alasdair Fraser, Michael Manning and Ken Bonfield. Brown plans to live on the Treasure Coast for the next year, before assuming a music teaching position with a university in Vermont (he currently is in discussion with two at this moment).

Larry is putting the finishing touches to a video in which he teaches the fundamentals of playing the guitar. The video is slated to appear on numerous Web sites around the world.
