Martin Memorial enhances maternal-child security
Contributed by: Scott Samples on 8/15/2008

Across the country, healthcare providers are taking increased measures to ensure the safety and security of new mothers and their babies during hospital stays.

"While Martin Memorial already has numerous security precautions in place to keep our patients safe, we are taking additional steps in our efforts to protect the safety and privacy of families who come to our hospital for what should be a joyous occasion," said Val Ruby, assistant vice president of perioperative and maternal child services.

Beginning Sept. 1, a limit of three people will be allowed to visit a patient at one time. This policy will eliminate having a large number of visitors on the floor, which will enhance patients' comfort and safety, while helping protect their privacy as well. Also, visiting hours will be suspended between 2-4 p.m., providing mothers and babies with an opportunity for much-needed rest.

To ensure safety and visitation policies are upheld, a Martin Memorial Safety and Security Officer will be positioned outside the elevators on the first floor of the Medical Center that lead to the maternal-child department. That officer will monitor the flow of traffic to and from the department. Family and friends will be asked to wait in the main lobby, cafeteria or coffee shop if they are not one of the people visiting a patient in her room.

This new policy coincides with renovations taking place in the maternal-child department. Additional labor and delivery rooms will be replacing the current waiting area. Renovations are expected to begin Sept. 1 and will be completed in 10 to 12 weeks.

Martin Memorial Health Systems is a not-for-profit, community-based healthcare organization. It offers a continuum of care including preventative, primary and acute hospital care, as well as cancer and cardiac care, wellness and rehabilitation services. Its approximately 2,900 Associates and more than 400 affiliated physicians operate 12 different locations serving Martin and St. Lucie counties. To learn more, visit www.mmhs.com.
