Well-known, local author, Sandra Thurlow, will celebrate Martin County Historic Preservation Month on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Sewall's Point Town Hall. Thurlow, a fifth generation Floridian and local historian, will share photographs and stories of the Captain Sewall House, also known as the Sewall's Point Post Office.
The Captain Sewall House, which stood on the tip of Sewall's Point, was home to Captain Henry and Abbie Sewall from 1889 to 1910. For the next ninety years it was located on Willoughby Creek beside Whiticar Boat Works and became a part of Port Sewall history. The century-old home, now located at Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach, is considered one of the historically and architecturally significant structures in Martin County.
Sandra Thurlow talks about the importance of Captain Henry Sewall and the impact his family had on Martin County's history in her book,
Sewall's Point, the History of a Peninsular Community on Florida's Treasure Coast, which was first published in 1992 and republished this year. Thurlow is also the author of three additional books;
Stuart on the St. Lucie, published in 2002;
Historic Jensen and Eden on Florida's Indian River, published last year; and
Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge Homeof History, which was produced with her daughter-in-law, Deanna Wintercorn Thurlow.
"I fell in love with Martin County 40 years ago when my husband brought me home to meet his parents," said Sandra Thurlow. "After I raised my family I turned my attention to local history and have devoted almost twenty years to researching, collecting and sharing local history."
Thurlow's book,
Sewall's Point, the History of a Peninsular Community on Florida's Treasure Coast, is available for purchase at Sewall's Point Town Hall during the month of October in honor of Martin County Historic Preservation Month, and year-round at several local bookstores.
