Donahue Donation to Expand Seating in the Palm City Library
Alice Donahue, a longtime supporter of the Library Foundation of Martin County and a former residenty of Palm Citym, continues her legacy of philanthropy today. " I was pleased to be able to make a donation of my Cadillac to the Library Foundation for their annual fundraising ball on March 1st, Alice commented.
Jack Cristin, President of the Board of Directors of the Library Foundation said that the car sold at the ball auction for $25,000 and the funds will be used for the expansion of the Palm City Library. In fact, Alice Donahue felt the need for a library in Palm City for many years as she watched the population grow and the main library in Stuart become increasingly crowded.
When she saw public funding for a branch actually become available, she decided to help make the new library all that it should be. One of her primary interests was in seeing that children do not have to be transported to a library by their parents, who then must cope with difficult parking conditions. With a library in their neighborhood, Palm City children could ride their bikes to the library, making the library more accessible to them and freeing up their parents.
At the time the original library was begin planned, Alice donated $75,000 to furnish and equip the community meeting space which bears her name, the Donahue Room. The $25,000 will be used to expand that room to allow for additional seating.
Suzanne Horstman, Executive Director of the Library Foundation notes that the room is used for many great cultural and educational programs and the timing of the gift couldn't be better.
Donna Tunsoy, Directory of the Martin Countyu Library System said, " The room is used by so many and often there is standing room only. Alice Donahue's generous donation is very warmly appreciated and will enrich the lives of the Palm City library patrons.
