Soroptimist International of Stuart's Favorite Eve
Contributed by: Karen Vaina on 6/23/2009

Soroptimist International of Stuart hosted their annual awards presentation at Chantal's Restaurant on May 21. Soroptimist members, grant recipients, scholarship winners and their parents were on hand to enjoy refreshments and entertainment. President Pam Hough, Vice President Janice Norman, and President-elect Glenna Parris welcomed the guests and hosted the program. Among the recipients were Violet Richardson Award winner, Chelsey Castallano and the charity she served, Big Brothers/Big Sisters with Executive Director, Irene Geraghity. The Making A Difference Award winner, former U.S. Representative Linda Smith (WA), won for her initiative in Shared Hope International's impressive program to halt sex trafficking in our region and across the world. This was particularly noteworthy for Soroptimist since Smith went on to also win at the Southern Region level at the Soroptimist conference in Alabama. The Women's Opportunity Award, which presents women with scholarships so that they may continue their education for the betterment of their families, went to Cynthia Oakowsky and Cindy Knight. Soroptimist's STEPS program awarded six impressive high school students with Youth Service Awards. The recipients were Dana Diffee, Regina Petgrave, Lauren Friedrich, Jenna Scrivani, Angel Longoria and Nathaniel Bruton. The students divided $5,000 in scholarship money and spoke briefly about their future majors that included hotel hospitality, nursing and psychiatry. In addition to scholarships, the STEPS program sponsors practice interviews for Martin County high school students who are chosen by their teachers to compete for the prestigious Pathfinder Awards. This year, two MC students, Ashley Baldwin and Tayliz Rodriguez were first place winners and six other local students placed in the stiff competition. The annual Community Service grants went to Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County accepted by Mat Churchey, Dunbar Center accepted by Gloria Patterson, Hibiscus Children's Center received by Thomas B. Maher and the House of Hope, accepted by Esther Brito.
