HISTORIC FISHNIC TO SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER
Contributed by: Adrienne Moore on 4/19/2009

Environmental Studies Council
Brings Back the Historic Fishnic

The Environmental Studies Council is re-creating one of Stuart's most popular community events, the historic Fishnic, as its 2009 fundraising project. It's a fish picnic and in its early days attracted nearly 2,000 people to each event.

The Fishnic on the St Lucie is Saturday, May 9th on the St. Lucie River at Flagler Park in downtown Stuart between 3 and 7 p.m. Pre-paid tickets are $25 per person and FREE for children 10 years old and under.

Tickets may be purchased at the Environmental Studies Center at 2900 NE Indian River Drive in Jensen Beach, by calling the Center at (772) 334-4643, at any of nine Martin County Seacoast National Bank locations and at Just Gold Jewelers. Tickets may be purchased the day of the event for $30 per person. Children under 10 are free.

The meal will consist of fried fish, hush puppies, corn, cole slaw, conch chowder, a beverage, and special desserts. The kids' meal will be hot dog, chips and a beverage. A cash bar will be available. There will be LIVE music and lots of children's activities, including old-fashioned games and crafts, plus raffles and maybe even a chance to do some fishing.

Kelly Bond Pelletier and Eileen Hatt are co-chairs for the event. They both organized the Council's popular Full Moon on the St. Lucie in 2008 at the Stuart Recreation Center in Flagler Park. The Fishnic event is sponsored by Seacoast National Bank, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, Southeastern Printing, The Dolphin Bar / Conchy Joe's restaurants and many others. Sponsorships are still available. Please contact Kelly Pelletier at the Center at (772) 334-4643.

The original Fishnic was organized by the Men's Garden Club in February 1965. It continued through the '60s, '70s and '80s and ended in 1991. It was held at what was then called the Stuart Youth Center and is now the Stuart Recreation Center on Flagler Avenue in downtown Stuart.

More than 1,800 people used to turn out for the Fishnic, which eventually had to provide Take-Out Service in order to handle the crowds. That was at a time when Martin County's population was less than 29,000 residents.
