(STUART, FL) - September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and with Florida school children returning to class now, Martin County Library System wants to make sure that your child has the smartest card of all - a library card.
Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
"A library card has always been the most important school supply of all," says Jennifer Salas, MCLS Youth Services Coordinator. "Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun. There's a lot happening at our libraries." A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.
Activities at the Martin County Library System during Library Card Sign-up Month will include the following:

Stories in Your Slippers, Exploration Lab, Blake Library, Monday, Sept. 8, 7:00 p.m.
Family story time with milk and cookies. Suggested for children ages 3-7. Wear your p.j.'s!

Homework Help for Parents and Kids, Computer Lab, Blake Library, Thursday, Sept. 11, 6:30 p.m. or Saturday, Sept. 20, 2:00 p.m.
For children in K-5th grade and their parents.
