Contributed by: Rhonda Irons on 6/23/2009

In May of 2009 members of the Martin County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 887 attended the Gulf Stream Council Exploring for Life Law Enforcement Challenge in St. Lucie County. This annual challenge provides a competitive opportunity for participants to test their skills and knowledge learned from their law enforcement "advisors" in nine events. Post 887 was awarded trophies in four areas:

Crime scene, first place
Domestic crisis intervention, second place
Drill and ceremony, second place
Overall scoring, second place

The volunteer members of the Martin County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 887 receive training throughout the year and have the opportunity to complete the Explorer Academy. Areas of discipline include basic patrol techniques, water certification, traffic stop, accident investigation, problem oriented policing, human diversity, report writing, criminal justice system, and history/role of law enforcement. The program is open to young men and women ages 14 to 20. For more information regarding the Martin County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 887, contact Senior Advisor Ginny Reeder at 772 220-7062.
