Literacy tutors break the barriers that prevent others from getting much of what life has to offer. People who can't read miss a lot.
The Morgade branch of the Martin County Library System on Salerno Road in Stuart will be the scene of a literacy-tutor workshop on Friday, Nov. 17. The workshop provides volunteers with training in tutoring adults to read and write in English.
The session will begin at 9:15 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. A lunch break is scheduled. The course is complete in one session.
Also, two orientation sessions are scheduled during the month of November. Orientations are designed to familiarize prospective volunteers with the work of the Council and the part played by tutors. The orientations will take place at the Hobe Sound Library on Nov. 7 and at the Blake Library on Nov. 9.
Tutors do not need to have a background in teaching, nor are they required to have a college degree. They do not need to know any languages other than English.
