United Way of Martin County is proud of its participation in the Martin County Supervisor of Elections Office "Adopt a Precinct" program during the recent round of elections.
United Way was the only nonprofit organization to take advantage of the program, which the Supervisor of Elections launched to encourage more people to get involved as poll workers and to provide a fund-raising opportunity for nonprofit groups.
Under the "Adopt a Precinct" program, earnings paid to poll workers could be donated to a local charity. (Poll worker positions range in payment from $90 to $120.)
United Way volunteers and staff members signed up for duty, went through training, and worked at a precinct during the primary election Sept. 5 and the general election on Nov. 7. The Supervisor of Elections Office assigned them the Martin Downs Country Club community in Palm City.
"With this initiative, we hoped to raise awareness about United Way's important role as a community solutions leader," said Jim Vojcsik, executive director of United Way of Martin County. "We also wanted take advantage of a creative fund-raising opportunity."
Vicki Davis, Supervisor of Elections, said her office was very pleased and appreciative of United Way's participation. "They were a great partner in raising voter awareness, serving the public and participating in the entire election process," Ms. Davis said. "The goal for 2008 is to have all 53 precincts adopted by local businesses, PTA's and non-profit organizations."
