Kathy and John Brown of Stuart, are putting their motto, "waste not, want not" into action every day. The Browns have extended their helping hands to their community by spearheading a "Bread Ministry" as volunteers for All Saints Episcopal Church in Jensen Beach, known as "The Little White Church on the Hill with a Big Heart."
Six days a week, the Browns collect individually wrapped loaves of bread at night, donated by Panera Bread and Mr. Bread then distribute the bread in the mornings to Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Clinic, Gertrude Walden Child Care Center, Indiantown Mission and Adonis Daycare in Golden Gate. On average, the Browns collect and distribute approximately 400 loaves per week.
Kathy visits VIM Clinic every Tuesday morning, bright and early, before she goes to work. She drops off 2-3 recycle bins overflowing with donated bread in all shapes, sizes and varieties. "We're usually so busy when we first open and she's so quick, like a little elf, that I rarely catch a glimpse of her dropping off the bread!" says Ellen Gade, Patient Services Representative, "but it is always here for the patients."
The VIM Clinic's patients are very thankful for the Brown's gift of bread. "You should see the joy on their faces!" shares Patient Services Representative, Joey Rosalia. Adding to her sentiments, Ms. Gade comments, "So many patients say, 'Thank You.' They are very appreciative that it is here. It goes fast!"
With an average of 40 patients seen per day, the bread at VIM Clinic goes very quickly. "The bins are emptied within the day," comments Ms. Rosalia. Gone, and gone to those really in need.
