Junior League Women Make a Difference
Contributed by: Heidi Monsour on 9/3/2009

Junior League women make things happen. They form strategic partnerships, create innovative programs and raise funds for exciting community initiatives. Members come from all walks of life - corporate executives, business owners, teachers, attorneys, stay-at-home wives and mothers, but all members have one thing in common...a heart for building a better community. On August 25th, the Junior League of Martin County held a mixer for potential members at the Children's' Museum of the Treasure Coast. Women from all over the community came out to learn how they could become a part of this exciting organization and make a difference in the lives of others.

Attendees learned from league president, Kathy Cresswell, that the Junior League of Martin County (JLMC) was chartered in 1992 and became a part of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) in 2000. Presently there are over 100 active and sustaining members who raise money and volunteer thousands of hours annually for service projects here on the treasure coast. The JLMC focuses on projects and organizations that help women and children in need and promote family preservation. Many local charitable organizations benefit from service and financial contributions made by the junior league including the Children's' Museum of the Treasure Coast, Gertrude Walden Child Care Center in Stuart and PACE Center for Girls in Stuart and Ft. Pierce. As the needs within our community increase, the JLMC continues to work hard developing new service projects to assist local non-profits in their efforts. The league has also established two new fundraisers for the coming year, a holiday themed 5K run and a women's film festival called LUNAFEST.

Membership in the Junior League is open to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and a commitment to voluntarism. The Junior League provides the opportunity to work within a dynamic, diverse group of women while developing new friendships and making a positive impact on the lives of others. Members receive hands-on training in leadership and organizational development, community needs assessment, strategic planning, communications, advocacy and fundraising. Through this unique training, Junior League members learn to manage and train volunteers, unite communities and form partnerships. Sponsorship is not required by the JLMC.

"New members are essential to the league's continued success in our community" says MIT Chairperson, Connie Webb. "I am always amazed at the fabulous women who come through our league doors each year!" Women interested in learning more about the JLMC may contact Connie Webb at 772-345-0006 or email at conniejlmc@yahoo.com. The 2009-2010 membership training program will begin September 15th.
