The Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 58, in Fort Pierce, received a plaque from District 7 in Recognition of Outstanding Participation during National Safe Boating Week. District 7 is comprised of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Only two awards were presented in this District so it was quite an honor for Flotilla 58 to receive one of the two. The beginning of March, Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce and Flotilla 58 members began working together on the Coast Guard Station Open House. Countless hours were spent planning and organizing this event May 20th event. Attendees were treated to tours of the Coast Guard Cutters, Search and Rescue demonstrations involving a Coast Guard Helicopter, a marine "touch tank", and multiple displays and booths provided by NOAA, local Sheriff and Police Marine units and boating safety organizations to name a few. To the delight of young and old alike, the Coast Guard Auxiliary entertained everyone with "Coastie" the talking, robotic boat which is used to teach children boating safety. PFD Panda was there as well giving kids' hugs and photo opportunities for their parents. With the help of Flotilla 56 from Vero Beach and Flotilla 59 from Stuart, they also provided visitors with Boating Safety publications, signed attendees up for Boating Safety Courses and free Vessel Safety Checks. For information about Boating Safety Courses, free Vessel Safety Checks, or joining the Auxiliary, please call 772-465-8128 and leave a message.
