It's Never Too Late To Make a New Friend
Contributed by: Andrea Nicholson on 9/19/2006

Claire Robert has three new friends. Two weeks ago, she met Rubert. Last week, it was Faith. And this week, she said "Hello" to Charley. In fact, Mrs. Robert, along with her fellow participants in the Martin County Council On Aging's Adult Day Care Program, is looking forward to making many more furry friends, like Rubert, Faith, and Charley, in the weeks to come.
For the last three weeks, an adoptable pet from Dogs & Cats Forever, the no-kill animal shelter in Port St. Lucie, has visited the program, and according to Sharon Beger, Activities Coordinator, the "club members," as they are called, are loving every minute of it. "It's going great," said Beger. "The animals give comfort to the clients. Seeing and touching the dogs and cats brings back happy memories for them."
Beger explained that between 30 and 40 men and women participate in the program, which meets every day from 7:30 am to 5 pm, and that their daily schedule includes activities designed to exercise both the mind and the body. She added that the visits from the dogs and cats are especially popular with the group.
"It's wonderful," said Mrs. Robert."The animals give us a spark." Fellow club member, Beatrice Nieves, agreed saying that the animals remind her of the pets she has had in her life. "I love it," she added. Bob Thomas felt likewise, as he held Charley in his lap, saying "This little fellow is great."
The animals love it, too, eagerly enjoying a hug, a pat on the head, or a gentle voice, and sharing a special moment with a new friend.
