Every dog has its day, but not every pooch has a wedding day. For Tiffany Cook, an 8-year-old standard poodle, and Skipper Medwid, a 12-year-old beagle/Jack Russell mix, their day finally came, thanks to staff at Summerville at Jensen Beach, a retirement and assisted living facility, who organized the mock wedding as a fundraiser for the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
The doggie duo were supported by their closest friends, all dressed in costumes, who participated in the wedding ceremony - from chihuahuas, cocker spaniels and labrador retrievers to dobermans, yorkies, poodles and even an Eskimo dog!
Dressed in the usual wedding gown and tuxedo attire, they were led by the Rev. Marshall Cook who presided over the ceremony, along with Storm, a corgi who lives with the bride. During the exchange of vows, Skipper barked on command to signal his "I do." This, after Skipper got cold paws as he slipped out of his collar and got temporarily sidetracked. In the end, the two were wed and as a result, more than $660 was raised to benefit the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and donations are still coming in.
Following the ceremony, human guests enjoyed a champagne reception, hors d'oeuvres and wedding cake, generously provided by Summerville, and the dogs "dug in," literally, to enjoy their special wedding cake.
The two decided to skip the honeymoon and get back to what they do best - provide comfort as therapy dogs at Summerville. They're also involved in the Humane Society's Paws to Read program and other humane education programs in schools and healthcare facilities.
For those who could not attend, the canine couple is requesting that donations be sent in the name of Tiffany and Skipper to: 100 SW Leighton Farm Ave., Palm City, Florida 34990. Or use the online form at www.humanesociety-tc.org and click on Give A Gift. For more information, call 772-223-8822.
