Prepare Your Dog This 4th of July
Contributed by: Doreen Poreba, The PR Czar® Inc. on 7/2/2008

The sun is setting and you, your family and friends are getting ready for an unforgettable fireworks display. Suddenly, you feel uneasy when you see your dog shaking in desperation from all the commotion.

Dogs and fireworks do not go well together. While we love the spectacle, the bangs, and the sheer exhilaration of a good fireworks display, dogs' ears are more sensitive than those of humans and do not handle loud noises well.

"Dogs will do whatever they think they have to in order to try and get away from the noise," said Candice Veach, director of operations at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. "Once they escape, they are at risk of getting injured, lost, or both."

The HSTC recommends the following:
· Make sure to keep your pets indoors.
· Put in a crate or a secure room, such as a bathroom, with favorite toys.
· Turn on a radio or TV to dilute the sound of the fireworks.
· Make sure pets have ID tags with current information. Make an appointment with your vet to have your pet micro-chipped

· If your vet has recommended sedative drugs for the evening, make sure it's given well before the fireworks start.

Two Don'ts:
· Don't reassure your pet as it rewards the behavior and increases the chance of it becoming worse the next time he/she feels dear

· Don't pay any attention to fear that seems to occur without reason. When your pet has had the time to recover, give him or her all the attention and praise you want.

"Treat your pets normally," said Veach, "because if you are excited or nervous they will sense this and react similarly. It is important that you keep your routine consistent and normal."

If your pet does run away, don't wait to start your search. Call Animal Control at 463-3211 or the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast at 223-8822. Also, check with your neighbors, other animal centers/ hospitals, and put up posters around your neighborhood and in grocery stores. Please note that the HSTC is closed on July 4 but Animal Control will be working.
