Mitch and Colleen Oakland owners of City Dog took time off in September for their annual vacation to Northern New York. They scheduled a stop at New York's Jefferson and Lewis County humane societies. These two counties are the home of the Army's 10th mountain division; over 17,000 military service men and women are stationed at the Fort Drum Army Base. Unfortunately many of the soldiers are unable to fine temporary housing for their pets when deployed and end up turning them over to local shelters. Colleen rallied City Dog customers, friends and family to help with their mission to bring relief to the strained shelters. "I just asked them to clean out their closets of used blankets, comforters, towels and donate loose change they had in their pockets."
Gertrude Oakland Mitch's mother who lives at Martin Memorial Rehabilitation and Nursing Center took action by resizing and sewing the blankets and comforters to fit dog and cat beds. Claire Clutter the Centers Activity Director, Gertrude Oakland and Daisy Lumsden who are residents were able to produce over 55 blankets for the homeless animals. " We are so glad to help the dogs and cats" said Mrs. Oakland. "It's such a worthy cause." Said Claire.
With donated loose change and a few bills the Oakland's were able to purchase 120 pounds of cat litter, 200 pounds of Perma Guard diatomaceous earth a holistic product used to kill both worms and fleas, toys, leads, office supplies, stainless steel bowls, laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, glass cleaner and bleach. " We will be able to worm and prevent fleas and ticks on over four hundred dogs and cats holistically. That will be a huge savings on their bugdet alone." Said Colleen.
Theses two facilities are in dire need of expansion, any one who would like to help either of these shelters, please contact them at

their phone number is 315-782-3260. Both operations are presently looking for someone to help them with grant writing to help build much needed additions. Building has stopped on these projects due to lack of funding.
