"Pouring watercolors is messy, somewhat unpredictable but always interesting,"
says Judy Mercer, who demonstrated this unique technique before the Palm City Art Associates April 20th meeting at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City.
Judy has been painting watercolors, which are filled with rich color and an underlying glow, since 1995. She learned this technique of watercolor pouring at a workshop at Cheap Joe's in North Carolina. First the paint is mixed with water to produce a very watery solution, then the watercolor paper, which has been prerpared with liquid mask and/or a sketch in pencil, is held up while the watercolor solution is literally poured over the paper. It can be swirled around to the desire of the artist who can achieve this by holding the paper flat and at different angles. Finally the excess solution is poured off into a large plastic catch basin. Often many pours are done, letting the paint dry in between pours. With watercolor pouring, "you will never get exactly the same results twice", Judy says, and "the transparency allows colors to shine through the subsequent poured layers as the paint blends and 'does its thing'".
The next meeting of the Palm City Art Associates will be Monday, May 18th at Immanuel Lutheran Church's fellowship hall at 1:00 p.m. Recipients of the organization's college scholarships will present their art work and their future plans to the group. The meetings are free and open to the public. Contact President Kendra Deltano at
