Art Associates Learn Picasa
Contributed by: Ruthann Hewson on 9/29/2009

The Palm city Art Associates, Inc. (PCAA) held it's first meeting of the season on Sept. 21st at Immanuel Lutheran Church's fellowship hall in Palm City. Noted photographer/ fine art printer and PCAA member Dean Smith gave an interesting and educational program on "Photo Finessing with Picasa".

This photo editing and cataloguing software, can be downloaded to your computer from Google for free. Dean says, "it is not a hard program to use" and he proceeded to demonstrate how to use Picasa with his laptop and photographic images projected on a large screen.

Dean taught the members how to improve their photographs with Picasa tools. Within the program, there are Basic Fixes which include: crop; straighten; red eye; auto contrast; auto color; retouch (similar to cloning); text; & fill light; Tuning which includes; fill light; highlights; shadows; color temperature; and natural color picker; and Effects which include: sharpen; sepia; B&W; warmify; saturation; soft focus; and graduated tint. "You can't hurt your image by playing around with your image ...unless you save your new image with the same name in the same folder", says Dean.

Within Picasa, photos also may be catalogued into folders, printed, emailed, uploaded to web sites, made into a collage or a movie, and even placed on the Google Earth Globe.

Dean started out in the printing business, then went on to a professional photography career which has spanned the last 42 years. Today Dean has refined his photography to fine art family portraiture, artfully finishing and printing his own canvas wall portraits. In addition he has the expertise and special equipment to offer fine art reproductions of traditional artwork.

The next meeting of PCAA will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church's fellowship hall off Martin Downs Blvd., in Palm City on October 19 at 1:00 p.m. Lisa P. Young, a well-known local will give an acrylic painting demonstration titled "Pushing the Envelope". The meeting is free and open to the public. Dean Smith's was an excellent program directed to a diverse audience in terms of its being familiar with the Picassa Program. This article covers his presentation to the PCAA artists very well and in great detail.
