The Treasure Coast Woodcarvers will hold its Annual Show on February 6 and 7, 2010, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, at Langford Park in Jensen Beach, Florida. Numerouse works by talented carvers will be displayed and sold along with the tools and materials from various vendors to the carving profession. A special display feature of the show is a custom, hand carved, miniature, wave rail Carousel, 26" in diameter by 20" tall, including a separate Horse Drawn Calliope that provides its typical Carousel Music. This work of art, which includes a custom built, cushioned container for storage and transporting will be offered for sale on the internet following the Show with the proceeds being donated to the Loggerhead Marine Center in Loggerhead Park, Juno Beach, Florida.
Today there is still in operation, an old, full size, wave rail Carousel in Little Rock, Arkansas with three rows of riding figures. The wave rail Carousel is a simple unique system that was used many years ago to achieve an up and down motion of the riding animals. To achieve this motion, precise mathematically designed circles with corresponding waves below the floor surface were created. All 16 unique animals were selected by an independent judging committee from a group of 30 entries submitted by Master Carvers who are members of the Club. The remaining 14 animals will be raffled off at the show.
The Treasure Coast Woodcarvers Carousel project is a joint effort by its members from start to finish. It began as an idea by Show Chairman, Don Millenbruch, and was designed and built by member Lou Simon with Mike Coccia contributing to the music and electronics. Simon was self employed for 39 years as a tooling and parts supplier for the Auto Industry until 1999. He constructed wood models for the automotive industry before the advent of computers and CAD systems.
