Strawberry/Champagne Soup
Serves 4
4 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
1 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed (this is Florida, after all)
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier
2 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup creme fraiche*
1 cup good Champagne
Combine the strawberries, orange juice and sugar in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Pour in a bowl and add the creme fraiche. Chill for 3 minutes in the freezer. Stir in Champagne just before serving.
This is a special dish for important events (which happen to fall on the weekend). Keep your eyes peeled - Charles and Camilla are here,
incognito
, celebrating their first wedding anniversary. I just sent them to the Green Market (which has moved to the little park just under the Roosevelt Bridge, near the Rec Center and the Feed Store, by the way) to get the strawberries. But if you see them happily mooning around Stuart Fine Foods later, please respect their privacy. After that dreadful heat in India they are happy to be back here, enjoying a coolish, grey Sunday.
*Creme fraiche can be store-bought or homemade. Whisk together equal portions of sour cream and heavy cream. Cover with plastic wrap and leave at room temp for about 12 hours. Refrigerate before using.
"Champagne, if you are seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector. It encourages a man to be expansive, even reckless, while lie detectors are only a challenge to tell lies successfully."
