A friend recently tipped off LogOn about a spot in Stuart where the food fills the stomach and soothes the soul.
A Taste of Grace
sits inconspicuously in a corner of
Treasure Coast Plaza
at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Florida Street. I missed it the first time I drove by because the large sign on the side of the building has been knocked down. I finally got my bearings the second time around when I saw the word "RESTAURANT" under the plaza sign.
I quickly got the impression when I walked inside the restaurant that the owners are trying to nourish the body and spirit. I could see images of crosses and hands clasped in prayer throughout A Taste of Grace.
The lunch and dinner offerings appear on a whiteboard behind the counter and include some familiar soul food - oxtails, ribs, smothered pork chops, chitterlings and more. Each meal comes with cornbread, rice and a choice of two sides, including collard greens, green beans, fried okra and cabbage.
I took a somewhat conventional route for my meal, ordering fried chicken with corn and lima beans ($7.99). I added a tall glass of a traditional Southern beverage, sweet tea ($2), to wash down the food.
The meal, which came after a short wait, covered every square inch of a large plate. The cornbread had to be served separately because the plate didn't have any more room.
The two pieces of chicken - a leg and a breast - had a somewhat spicy taste. I turned down an offer for some hot sauce for the chicken before I started eating. That proved to be a smart move because the chicken already had plenty of flavor.
I polished off the chicken, got as far as I could on the fixings and downed two glasses of sweet tea. I paid at the counter and left, convinced I wouldn't have to eat again for days.
