LogOn and a couple friends recently visited downtown Stuart for a bite to eat and a place where we could enjoy a pleasant spring day. We found both at
T.A. Vern's
.
A self-described "Stuart tradition," T.A. Vern's sits right on Haney Circle in the heart of downtown. The inside of the restaurant appears to be spacious and comfortable, but my friends and I were more interested in sitting on the sidewalk patio where we could take in the warm weather and watch people walk by. The host quickly escorted us to an outdoor table under an awning and gave us menus.
The menu features several meals with an Italian theme - a panini sandwich, a burger and salad with gorgonzola cheese and 12 kinds of wood-fired oven pizzas. Diners who aren't in the mood for Italian have plenty of options, too. T.A. Vern's has enough different types of salads and "Haney Circle sandwiches" to satisfy everyone in a lunch group.
One of my friends focused on the salads and asked for a blackened chicken Caesar salad with asiago cheese ($7.50). Customers can also get the Caesar salad plain or with dolphin or calamari on top.
My other friend chose the Grouper Wrap Around ($8.95). The sandwich contained grouper, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard wrapped in a spinach tortilla.
I ordered last and went with a blackened dolphin sandwich ($8.50) and a glass of T.A. Vern's draft root beer ($2.25) to wash it down. The sandwich had two thick dolphin filets covered in spices and surrounded by a pair of large hamburger buns. The meal included fries and a side of lettuce and tomato.
My companions and I liked our meals, but they were too big to finish. I had to ask for a box for what was left of my sandwich. We each paid with our cards and then sat back in our chairs for a few more minutes, talking and relaxing in the warm weather.
