The Chinese and Japanese have a long history as military, economic and cultural rivals, but LogOn has found a restaurant in Stuart where their distinctive cuisines reside together.
Sake House
serves a wide range of food from both countries. Depending on what mood you're in, you can order egg drop soup or miso soup, egg rolls or shumai (shrimp dumplings), kung po chicken or sushi.
The restaurant appears to make a conscious effort to maintain the distinction between the two cuisines in a variety of ways.
Customers have to ask for a Chinese or Japanese menu when they sit down at their tables. The restaurant offers the Chinese menu throughout its business hours, but it makes the Japanese menu available at fixed times during the day. A diner, for example, could buy only Japanese food for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the work week.
The layout of the restaurant also contributes to distinguishing between the two styles of food. I noticed a buffet with Chinese favorites along one side of the dining room. On another side, a sushi chef stood behind a bar, ready to slice fresh fish.
I glanced at the Japanese lunch menu and felt tempted by the thought of a dancing salmon roll with miso soup. I realized I was a bit light in the shell, however, so I couldn't pass on the inexpensive Chinese buffet ($5.99).
The buffet has a limited number of options, especially compared to the full Chinese menu, but I still saw plenty of appealing dishes. I filled my plate with vegetable lo mein, moo goo gai pan and the spicy General Tao's chicken and poured myself a cup of egg drop soup.
I went back to my booth and chowed down on the familiar Chinese favorites. As soon as I finished, the waiter brought my check and a fortune cookie.
My fortune says I "have a deep appreciation of the arts and music." I could easily add "good Chinese and Japanese food" to that statement.
