Labor Day isn't quite the celebration here on the Treasure Coast that it is in other parts of the country. School has already started, the heat and humidity are still a fact of daily life and after all, we get to cook outside all year 'round. The residents of most other not-so-sun kissed states are getting ready to wrap it up for one more summer before heading indoors. Maybe that's why - other than casting a watchful eye to the tropics - we don't do much big-time partying. But look what foodies have going for them in other states:
Morgan City, Louisiana celebrates the state's two natural resources during the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival
The Hatch Chile Festival, in the New Mexico town of the same name, features entire meals made of ancho, Serrano and jalapeno peppers. Don't forget the beer!
Want to pig out on ribs? Head to the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off in Sparks, NV. More than 25 cooks from across the country will be competing as only rib cookers can.
Casey, Il has the unique distinction of hosting the Casey Popcorn Festival and the Rib America Festival in Indianapolis is pretty self-explanatory.
And what would Buffalo, NY be without wings? Thanks to the National Buffalo Wing Festival, we'll never have to know. Enjoy the best that 30 local and national restaurants have to offer, and stick around for the crowning of Miss Buffalo Wing.
This summer-ending (for most) national holiday, which has been with us since the 1880s, is unique in that it celebrates the individual worker, not a famous person, sect, race, nation or battle of man's prowess over man! It's your day - enjoy it!
Judy Graziosi e-mailed in response to our "School Lunch" column to tell us about Big Daddy YumYums, a delicious concoction of ground beef in cream of mushroom soup served on a hamburger bun. She's been trying to duplicate the taste ever since!
