In lives filled with low-fat, low-calorie, diet of the month regimens, there has to be room for treats. And what's a better treat than a beautiful, home-made cake that tastes as good as it looks? Here on the Treasure Coast, we're fortunate to have some of the finest bakers of custom goodies to be found anywhere. Here are just a few:
Sweet and Fancy Cake Boutique has a website that will just about have you drooling on your keyboard. Visit
www.sweetandfancy.com and view some of their spectacular offerings. But, by all means, don't feel limited by what you see on the screen: they specialize in sugar figurines that can decorate virtually anything you can imagine. Although "cake" is in their name, check out the pastries and iced, decorated cookies, too. They're located at 3539 NW Federal Highway, Jensen Beach, (772) 232-9505.
Wedding Cakes by Dee is the name, but the selection of baked wonders is much wider than that. Dee and her 74-year-old mom bake everything from scratch, and everything includes 38 different flavor cakes and 15 fillings. One of their specialties, other than the aforementioned, is duplicating cartoon figures on kids' cakes. As a matter of fact, they encourage potential customers to bring in pictures that they'd like to have duplicated on the sweet treat of their choice. It's almost impossible to stump them! Visit Wedding Cakes by Dee at 160 NE Dixie Highway, Stuart, (772) 486-2965
The team at Banbury Cross Bakery can do it all - and chances are they have! Basketball and football cakes, mermaid and Nemo themes and, of course, spectacular wedding and other special occasion cakes. They're so confident you'll be thrilled with their work, that they actually keep a scrapbook of wedding cakes "before and after" pictures - the photo that was brought to them to use as a model, and the finished product as they created it. Most people prefer the Banbury Cross edition. Stop by 8953 SE Bridge Road, Hobe Sound, (772) 546-7473.
In my "Cooking with a CIA Guy" article, I inadvertently used the wrong website for the catering arm of the Raynolds' business: it is
www.silverplatterentrees.com.
