Battle of Gettysburg (trip) in Jeopardy!
Contributed by: Genie Stracuzzi on 5/14/2008

Cannons roaring in the distance; the lucrid smell of black powder and muskets; the feel of the July sun scorching your neck ... Question is: is this 2008 or 1863? Answer is: both!

This summer marks the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Much has transpired in this great country since then, and yet, many things are the same. The country is still split politcally, there are still hard feelings over socio-economics, people are still striving for equality and respect. What has changed are the freedoms of speech and expression. Most don't even cringe anymore when it comes to our language skills or our expression of clothing and dress. The choice of whether our current times are better now than then is debateable!

There is a group of teens that want to truly experience the 1860's in every way possible without the use of a time-machine. The members of the 4-H Club, "Country Crossroads", is an all-teen club that's focus has been on colleges, careers, and community services. These same members have been planning this trip to Gettysburg for the past three years. They plan on traveling together, camping 5 days together, cooking their meals on an open fire pit, using cast iron pots and pans, bathing in a bucket with water retrieved from a stream, and listening closely to other Civil War Reenactors explain history in their first-person impressions!

Stop! Now comes the "jeopardy" part of the story! When budgets were written and fund raising events planned, gas was 'normal', at $3 per gallon. This Club hasbeen forcedto adjust the fuel portion three different times. And, now, they've had to again, adjust the fuel costs, to $5 per gallon, and that's just a guestimation for July 2008. After all this time, these teenagers may not be able to go? That's sad!

"NO Hand-outs! You must earn your way!" These are words by their 4-H Club advisor, Genie Stracuzzi. So, for three years, these kids have held garages sales, gift wrapping events, lemonade stands, and car washes. Acknowledging that times are tough for everyone, they're finding that $200 garage sales divided up 7 ways sure doesn't go very far.

Their Proposal? Work for Fuel! Businesses and Home Owners need extra jobs done! Think about it! How about the strange, the never-get-around-to-it's ie base boards; windows; weeds; washing the dogs; washing cars/trucks/busses/semi's? These kids will work!
