9 boy scouts and 3 adult leaders from Troop 840 experienced a once in a life time sailing adventure in the Abacos in the Bahamas. Scout master Bob Norwillo mentioned "We flew from Ft. Lauderdale on Bimini Island Air to Marsh Harbor on June 14. We were met by Captain Tom and his wife Linda who used their 24 foot dingy to shuttle the group to the CIGANKA - a 78 ft. steel gaff rigged ketch weighing in at 65 tons - where we spent the next 7 days and 6 nights. The boys learned how to set sail the two masted, 4 sail sailboat, cooked all their meals, cleaned the head and swabbed the decks."
Scout Gregory Kusel exclaimed "The trip was out of this world. Jam packed with snorkeling, exploring, and sailing- so much to do in so little time - as we dodged in and out of thunderstorms!"
Assistant Scout Master Jim Kusel described "this trip will be forever etched in to the minds of our scouts as was the sailing trip I took while I was in high school; it brought back those fond memories."
Scout Charlie Ortner stated, "Captain Tom did a fantastic job. He made sure none of us sunburned, made it so easy for the weakest swimmers to enjoy snorkeling with beautiful drift dives, and showed us how to clean a Queen Conch as well as eat it sushi style!"
Linda, Captain Tom's wife was in charge of the Galley. Scout Matthew Kastelic said 'We changed her name to Admiral Linda because she scheduled for us to cook the best cuisine any boat in the Abacos could serve - pot roast, baked chicken, NY strip steaks, steak fries, plain cakes, dump cakes, pancakes, brownies, French toast -makes your mouth water thinking about it."
Scout Tony Norwillo states "the fishing was non existent, but I cannot wait to go back and try again." If you are interested in adventures like this join a scout troop in your neighborhood. For more information about a scout troop near you call 561-694-8585.
