The Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC) is pleased to announce the 2008 recipients of the Robert J. Skidmore, Sr. Scholarship.

She is beginning her fourth year of study and is a four-time recipient of the award. Victoria Malaney, a graduate of Lincoln Park Academy, is attending Skidmore College in New York State. She is a three-time recipient and is pursuing a degree in Maritime Law. Bretland Smith-Sawka, a graduate of Jensen Beach High School and two time award recipient, is seeking a career in Marine Transportation. He is currently attending Texas A & M University-Galveston in the Texas Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets.

First time recipients are Kelly Renee Knoth, Katrina Morrison and Brian Sees. Knoth is a graduate of Martin County High School. She will attend Florida State University to pursue a degree in Marine Sciences and Marine Biology. Morrison is a graduate of Jensen Beach High School and has been accepted into the Maine Maritime Academy, where she will major in Small Vessel Operations. Sees is also a graduate of Martin County High School and will attend the Universal Technical Institute, Marine Mechanics Division, in Orlando, Florida. Sees plans to return to Martin County to work in the marine industry. His long range goal is to manage or own a marine repair facility.

Stephanie Skidmore was on hand to award the scholarships. The Robert J. Skidmore, Sr. Scholarship was established in 2004 to provide assistance to college-bound students who plan to pursue careers in the marine industries.

The fund was named posthumously in honor of Robert J. Skidmore, Sr., who became a member of the MIATC in 1988, when he moved to the Treasure Coast. Bob served on the association's board in 1989 and as president in 1993 and 1994. He was instrumental in moving the Stuart Boat Show to its first in-water site at Northside Marina. With Bob's help, the Stuart Boat Show has become one of the most successful and fastest-growing regional shows between Palm Beach and Charleston. The MIATC is honored to present this award to these outstanding young adults.
