Heroes are all around us.
Contributed by: "Capt Joel" Kilmer - Big Dog Comics on 2/23/2008

Our life's go pretty fast, and more so as we get older. We seldom take time to thank the simple stranger who tries to help someone or something. The worker with a ladder, an animal control officer, or a retired sheriff deputy may all be drawn together on the side of a road for a cause they couldn't foresee that morning. Well for one myself and the Red Tailed Hawk they all helped save, say Thanks.

Last week as I turned on to Midway road, I saw a car, the animal control officer's truck, and my friend Eddy a retired deputy at the side of the rode. All were staring at something so I stopped, thinking it might be a reptile problem that I could help with. [I am a Florida Naturalist and Herpetologist] I could not see what had grabbed there interest until it lifted it head and looked frightened at its audience. It seems a passer by had seen this Hawk, hurt or ill at the side of the road and summoned help.

The hawk was favoring its right wing and as it would be natural for an animal to do, it went deeper into cover to find protection from these possible biped predators. Not knowing how deep or unstable the ditch was, the direct approach seemed impossible. Finally a Comcast cable truck stopped and a ladder was borrowed to get across the ditch and closer.

Eddy cautiously crossed the ditch with a long handled net. Some kept the birds attention while others helped with directions on how position the net for a safe capture. With a gentle swoosh the net descended precisely. The hawk must have sensed that we were trying to help and it recoiled into the net and did not struggle. Carefully the hawk and Eddy returned from the underbrush and with the help of Animal Control officer Mary Keene and myself, was gently switched to a holding cage and put in the Animal Control officer's truck. It was taken to Saint Lucie County's own, Creature Safe Place, for Wynne Burn to care for.

All were proud of the team work and success and gave the raptor one more look and a goodbye. As easily as they came together all went their own way, only now a feeling of comfort and satisfaction went with them. Great people come in many packages and rise up and come together when the need arises. Saint Lucie County has good people, Heroes on some level that may live right across the street from you.

To all the unsung heroes who do what they do, Thank You and may God Bless.
