Yes, roses are in bloom and the heat of summer is coming! You can tell because the St. Lucie West Garden Club had its last general meeting for the season. In preparing their good byes for the summer, officers gathered information for their end of the year reports and thank yous. Discussion during the meeting included landscaping for the Habitat for Humanity Women's Build project which will bring members out to dig into the earth this coming week. Sounds like a day to remember!
In the interim, lots of great activities are planned for next year. Look forward to lectures, workshops, bus trips, community service projects, sending children to Wekiva gardening camp, a flower show and heaven knows what else our fearless leaders will dream up for us.
Their careful planning of this last meeting included a refreshing reward - learning about roses from The Blooming Idiots. Really! This guest speaker team of mother and daughter are experts at growing Old Country Roses that live comfortably in our local climate. Lots of good ideas were shared. Details given included root stock, nutrients (alfalfa pellets!?!), planting techniques, references and resources, and a few funny garden stories thrown in for our amusement. What a cool way to end the year- coming up roses!
If you are interested in more information about the projects of the St. Lucie West Garden Club, please give President Judy Brown a call at 873-6884.
