Flowers and Friends in St. Lucie West
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 10/6/2007

Great beginnings: It was the first meeting of the St. Lucie West Garden Club for 2007-8! This year's theme "Let Flowers and Friends bring sunshine to your life" was a perfect description of the day. The 9:00 a.m. social was just right for catching up with everyone's summer activities, then on to business with reports from committees.

Each year the club gives scholarships to students who attend the Florida Federation of Garden Club's Camp Wekiva. Jan Oliver explained the scholarship recipients' activities. As planned, the youngsters learned and enjoyed their time at the camp.

Habitat Chairmen Judy Brown and Kathy Koning reported on Habitat for Humanity projects which materialized just after the club's last meeting in the spring. The landscaping of one home and the gift of container gardens for National Garden Week were fun for all and much appreciated by the Habitat families involved. Photos of this activity can be seen at http://www.districtx.org/photo_gallery.html

Horticulture Chairman Uta Mc Fadden described techniques for selecting and cutting a variety of items for the upcoming Flower Show in March. Her samples were gorgeous and all from her garden. She also had a moment to encourage people to get ready for the March Style Show. With our members as models and styles from Draper's and Damon's, the luncheon is sure to be a good fundraiser.

Rob Schneider, Greenhouse Manager of Odom's Orchids, gave a presentation on orchid selection and care. He brought many varieties to illustrate his talk and provided excellent tips for growing orchids. He demonstrated the techniques for dividing and repotting, then encouraged those interested to attend classes scheduled to start November 3rd at Odom's Ft. Pierce greenhouses. Rob used door prize tickets to select two members who were given beautiful plants to take home. Of course the good news for our members who love to shop, he came prepared to sell his the rest of beautiful samples!

Last on the day's agenda, St.Lucie West Garden Club Past President and Master Flower Show Judge Bea Cooper demonstrated design basics. She discussed balance techniques as she assembled several designs using heliconia. By using different containers she showed how a designer can make magical changes.

The meeting was a wonderful start to the new season. With so much to be done, President Judy Brown had to do a good deal of organizing of "Flowers and Friends". She did a great job, as always. She'll be happy to answer questions for those who would like to know more about the St. Lucie West Garden Club. She can be reached at 772-873-6884.
