MARITIME MEMOIRS FEATURES AUTHOR MICHAEL GRUNWALD
Contributed by: Adrienne Moore on 2/21/2009

Author Grunwald To Discuss The Swamp

In 1905, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward became Florida's 19th Governor on a promise to drain the Everglades.

In 2000, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project was signed into law, with federal and state funds dedicated to restoring the Florida Everglades.

These two events are just part of the story award-winning author Michael Grunwald will discuss, as he appears as the final speaker in the Maritime Memoirs lecture series hosted by the Maritime & Yachting Museum of Florida. Grunwald is the author of the critically-acclaimed history of the Florida Everglades, The Swamp.

His presentation is Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Pelican Yacht Club, 1120 Seaway Drive in Fort Pierce. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 7 p.m. Reservations are $15 for members, $22 for non-members and $10 for students with student ID. Seating is on a first come, first-served basis. Reservations can be made by contacting the Maritime Museum at (772) 692-1234.

Grunwald began his review of the Everglades in 2000 when the restoration project was under review for funding. He was working on an article about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Washington Post. That was followed by a series of articles on the environmental destruction and efforts to improve the Everglades.

The reporter is the recipient of the Society of Environmental Journalists Award in 2003, A George Polk Award for national reporting, and the Worth Bingham Award for investigative reporting. He is also the recipient of the Gold Medal in Non-Fiction from the 2006 Florida Book Awards.

The Maritime & Yachting Museum of Florida is located at 3250 So. Kanner Hwy. in Stuart. It is the host of the Maritime Memoirs series of speakers discussing maritime and environmental issues. In addition, the museum has on exhibit Crafting the Sail: Vessels on View, a model boat exhibition on sailing ships dating back to Sir Francis Drake.

A second exhibit, The Evinrude Story, is on display at a special exhibition in the Langford Pavilion at Indian RiverSide Park in Jensen Beach. Original outboard engines and a history of the Evinrude family in the engine business are featured.

For additional information, contact the museum at (772) 692-1234.
