Osteoporosis affects 25 million Americans and causes more than 1.5 million fractures of the wrist, vertebrae and hips each year.
In order to raise awareness about this disease and its potential affects, the Dr. Brandon Nevel of Silver Surf Sports Chiropractic & Rehab. and the City of Palm Beach Gardens Community Services Department will host a free health talk "Understanding Osteoporosis" on Saturday, June 13th. The event will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Burns Road Recreation Center, located at 4404 Burns Road, P.B.G.
The seminar will focus on understanding the causes of osteoporosis, prevention and management tips for women who already have osteoporosis and for those who simply wish to learn more about it. Dr. Nevel, a chiropractic physician, will discuss the different types of osteoporosis, common fractures, diagnosis, risk factors, as well as the importance of nutrition in preventing osteoporosis and give tips on how to include more calcium into a daily diet. A question and answer session with Dr. Nevel will follow.
Paul Kohler, coordinator of the Health and Wellness seminar for the City of Palm Beach Gardens, explains that this event is important because it makes reliable information accessible to people seeking answers concerning their health.
"There is so much information out there on the Internet, which can often be overwhelming and incorrect. Health talks such as this are important because they give residents the opportunity to receive information face-to-face from credible sources," Dr. Nevel says.
"Understanding Osteoporosis" is one in a series of health talks for the summer of 2009. Other talks will include "Understanding Arthritis" and "Surviving Sports Injuries." The health talks are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. To register to attend, please visit
