Whats a Vero Beach Power Squadron
Contributed by: Robert Scully   on 9/23/2009

Vero Beach Power Squadron is a non-profit boating safety education organization. Our goal is to provide safety boating education to the public and our members.

The Squadron's organized boating activities are cruises and rendezvous. Any member who has a boat, power or sail, is welcome to participate, and members without are invited to go along as crew with another member. A Boating Activities committee plans these cruises and raft-ups and publicizes them through the local newsletter and membership meetings.

The Vero Beach Power Squadron, a member of District 8, is one of the 450+ squadrons of the United States Power Squadron ®.

Would you like to be a member? Membership is by application and is for anyone who shares our common love of boating, has passed a public boating course, and who is interested in advancing the objectives of the organization: the education of members, participation in civic programs, and the creation of an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie among members.

A public boating course refers to the courses offered by USPS®, or the Coast Guard Auxiliary. If you have taken the home study or video version of the USPS® course but have not taken the examination, arrangements can be made to take the examination.

Active members must be at least 16 years of age; there are no age considerations for family members.

What's In It for You? As well as our monthly meetings (on the second Monday of the month) we hold an informal Friday night social in the squadron building from 1730-1930. This gives all our members the opportunity to socialize on a non-boating basis and to meet new and visiting members. This is a BYOB event.

In the boating season, on-water and off-water events, such as cruises and rendezvous, are part of our social activity

Any member who has a boat, power or sail, is welcome to participate, and members without are invited to go along as crew with another member. A Boating Activities committee plans these cruises and raft-ups and publicizes them through the local newsletter and at membership meetings.

The rendezvous are picnic-like social events, and members are encouraged to arrive by boat, when possible.

A great variety of courses to choose from: As a USPS® member, you and your family can enroll in a great variety of advanced grades and elective courses which are only available to USPS® members. These courses include Seamanship, Piloting, Celestial Navigation, Weather, Sail, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics and Cruise Planning. In addition, USPS® offers more than two dozen self study courses on such subjects as the Water Sports, Boat Insurance, Oceanography, Introduction to Sailing, Preparation for Coast Guard Licensing, and much more.

Meeting with other boaters in our area: As a member of a local squadron (and there are approximately 450 squadrons throughout the USA, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands) you will join with other knowledgeable boaters in your area who are familiar with the local waters, the best anchorages, and marinas and boat repair shops.

Participation in a variety of on water activities: As a USPS® member you're automatically invited to join in the squadron and district cruises, rendezvous, predicted log contests, raft up's and other boating activities.

Savings on Boat Insurance: There are many marine insurance companies which provide discounts to those who complete advanced boating courses. This savings can be significant.

USPS® Networking with other members throughout the USA, Canada and even more distant areas: Thinking of boating in a river, lake or ocean far from your home? USPS® has a Port Captain program which will provide names and telephone numbers of local USPS® members who know the territory.
